How To Take Artistic Nude Photos

If you’re like most photographers, there have been times you wondered how exactly to take nude photos which were artistic and beautiful instead of sleazy or dirty. Whenever you say you’d like to do something like that, other people jump straight to the wrong conclusion but, historically, the nude has always been one of the purest and most beautiful of artistic expressions. The great masters painted them, sculpted them, and - yes - photographed them.

So, despite what some parts of society would have you believe, there is no shame to be attached to wanting to take nude photos. Such shame should rather be attached to those who produce the glut of meaningless photographs that fill are magazines and computer screens, and adorn our walls - photos which express nothing and make no statement to the person looking them.

Even when this is your bread and butter, and you photograph food or furniture for a living, there is always the artist inside that cries out for release. And for some, the drive to take nude photos is always there… we recall Michelangelo’s work, and da Vinci’s, and Botticelli’s; and some few of us recall Bernhard, Brigman, and Weston.

The cultural sensitivity in America makes it difficult to pursue these noble goals. While some few among us do see the beauty in the nude figure, the art in its careful arrangement and capture, whenever the subject of how to take nude photos is broached - the perception is always that the photographer is doing something dirty or crude.

But now, there’s an answer to that problem. Without raising eyebrows or inspiring whispers, you can learn to take nude photos artfully and tastefully from a range of books that are available on the subject…and get real, professional advice from people who know the field and can tell you the techniques and secrets that bring your work from amateur to professional status.

Photo Lighting Kits

In photography, angled shots and lighting play a key role in snapping shots with great quality. Photographers are often aware of proper lighting and it's importance in creating amazing results. It is simply a question of what type of studio lights or photography lighting kits would produce the best photographs for there particular situation. Continuous lighting or flash lighting, also sometimes referred to as strobe lighting.

For a quick burst of light at 5600K, pro photographers will often use flash lighting kits to simulate sunlight in the studio. Often creating the greatest photography image results. These flash strobe studio lights and kits require that the photography lights themselves be synched timing wise with the photographers camera to flash in time with the shutter’s lens. Most flash lights will do this from a slave sensor that's built into the flash light. The photographer, with synching his camera to just one flash light, this timing will be transmitted to the other flash lights in the kit wirelessly so they will all flash at the same time.

Not requiring synchronization of any kind, continous photography lighting kits on the other hand are very simple to us. There are two popular variations for continuous lighting to choose from, fluorescent and halogen studio lighting kits for both photography and video production. For constant brightly glowing light, photographers can use continuous lighting with the ease of flipping a switch.

Fluorescent kits for lighting in photography are much more energy efficienct than halogen kits because they use a lot less electricity to operate. For photography lights that are cool to the touch and produce no heat, fluorescent lighting is the answer. Unlike Halogen studio lights or otherwise known as hot lights. Halogen bulbs burn brighter than fluorescent bulbs but also use more electricity and create heat as well. When comparing the two for continuous lighting, this is something to keep in mind for video or photography production.

For ease of use, many photographers prefer continous lighting over flash lighting. Photography lighting kits like these for shooting video, products, and portraits will help create beautiful images.

It’s a simple fact that we live in a throw-away society. You buy that brand new fancy digital camera with all the bells and whistles for $400, and in 6 months to 1 year it’s worth maybe half that, and then the unthinkable happens: you drop it and it breaks. The LCD is cracked, or the lens is jammed; what do you do? You go back to there store where you bought it and the kid working there that knows next to nothing about cameras to begin with, let alone camera repair, tells you to throw it in the garbage and it’s not fixable. You feel ripped off and mad at the camera manufacturer and you toss it out and buy a new one made by somebody else.

There are always alternatives to every problem including this one. Honest! Yes, it may cost 0 to fix your camera, and yes you can buy that camera in the bubble pack on the shelf at Wall Mart for less than 0, but what kind of quality do you honestly expect from a 0 camera? Not very good quality I hope, because you’re not going to get it.

#1 - Broken/cracked LCD screen.

I found it difficult to decide between broken lens repair and cracked LCD screen repair for #1, but I choose the LCD because it can be broken so easily that you can do it without even touching the camera!

The LCD (Liquid Crystal Display) is the view screen on the back of the camera that lets you see menus, playback pictures etc. An LCD screen is a very thin and fragile part of the camera and on many of them it is completely unprotected! Look at the back of your camera, is the screen recessed slightly or is the back of the camera flat and smooth? If it’s flat you have a protective ‘window’ or ‘glass’ over the LCD to help prevent damage and breakage. If it’s not flat, you have nothing protecting your LCD and should put a good quality LCD screen protector on the camera and NOT those thin, flimsy ’saran wrap’ plastic film screen protectors, they are worthless.

- Don’t leave your camera in your car in summer or winter. Extreme heat can cause expansion of the liquid in the LCD and cause it to ‘crack’, and on the other side of things extreme cold can cause it to freeze!

- Don’t put anything up against the LCD in your camera bag, it will bang against the LCD and crack it (yes, even if it has a window over it, it will break!)

- Don’t put your camera in your back pocket and then sit down!

- Don’t put your camera in your front pocket and then roll over on it.

- … Please do not put your camera in your pants pocket. =)

Ok, so it’s broken, what do you do now?

- The manufacturer will just site impact damage and will refuse the repair even if the camera wasn’t dropped etc. You can try, and I wish you luck, but they probably won’t fix it.

- Search for defective cameras on eBay and use one to repair yours and make one good camera out of them.

- Look for an actual camera repair business and not somebody that will send it to the manufacturer and tell you it’s $200 and 4-6 weeks to repair. (If they tell you this, they are NOT repairing your camera for you, they are sending it to the manufacturer, guaranteed)

Many LCD screens are very easy to install and you can do it yourself and all you need is a small screwdriver. There are LCD repairs that are quite difficult; even seasoned pro’s don’t want to do them! I can’t tell you Brand …. is the best and Brand … is the worst, it’s really not like that. There are certain series of cameras that have one or two models that are more difficult to repair but the others are more straight forward. You need to decide for yourself if you want to open your camera and try the repair yourself or not.

How is the LCD screen replaced?

With most Canon digital camera LCD screens for example (using them as the example because they have the largest market share) all you do is disconnect the ribbon cable for the LCD and the backlight (the light that shines through the LCD and allows you to see what is on the screen) and then install the new LCD. Some LCDs do come with the backlight that shines through it attached and others do not. Some backlights need to be soldered to the mainboard of the camera, some do not.

- Be careful to not touch the flash capacitor contacts! You will shock yourself pretty good if you do it and it will hurt a bit. You may end up tossing the camera half-way across the room when it happens to you. (Yeah, I’ve done it, I’ve been repairing cameras for 5 years now so….) We use an item called a “flash capacitor discharger” and we use them every time we work on a camera.

I hope this sheds some light on the subject of digital camera repair. There’s no need to toss out your camera just because the LCD screen is broken, in fact you might be able to fix it yourself!

Ladies and Gentlemen … Start Your Backups

Don't Let This Happen To You

Sweetie!?! The computer is making a strange clicking sound.
What’s that smell? Is something on fire?
Weren’t all your pictures on that computer?
Oh, no!

Don’t be a loser … like me.  I am talking about loss, data loss.  In terms of digital photography I am talking specifically about the pictures of your life that are more than likely all stored in one place only: the hard drive of your computer.

Wedding pictures, vacation pictures, birthdays, holidays; these precious moments of your life can be lost in an instant from a bolt of lightning or the spark of static electricity you might pick up from rubbing your feet across the carpet. Machines are imperfect and do fail, and by Murphy’s Law, they will fail at the worst possible time.

If you experience a hard drive failure it could cost between 0 and 00 to recover the data depending on the severity of the hard drive crash, and this service is not guaranteed.  The data could be lost permanently anyway.  What dollar value do you place on your digital photo archive?

Here is a short list of things you can do to protect your valuable photos, videos and other personal data:

Buy and Keep Your Antivirus Software Up To Date

Malicious viruses can erase your hard drive.  Use a system that is updated automatically every day with the latest virus definitions.

Keep Your PC Serviced

When dust collects in and around your hard drives, they overheat and that will shorten the life of the drive.  Your personal computer is a big dust filter.  Have it serviced by a professional at least once a year and keep them off of the carpeted floor, away from dust and pet dander.

I recommend getting an air filter and keep it in the room with your PC.  Your PC will not collect as much dust and, as an added benefit, you will breathe less dust at the same time.

Keep Your Data and Photos Backed Up

Backing up your photos and data over the web is becoming a very popular choice for data backup.  This was formerly a pretty expensive solution for the convenience, but with the lowering cost and expanding capacity of hard drives, many web based services are popping up.  Online backup is like buying an insurance policy for your digital photo archives.

Here are the advantages of backing up to the Internet:

You can backup securely over any high speed Internet connection.

Since your data is stored on a server offsite, you are covered from events such as PC theft, fire or hard drive failure. You might consider what would happen if there is an earthquake, flood or other natural disaster wherever your backups are stored.

Mozy.com is the online backup system that I use. Recommended by PC World Magazine, it works equally well on PC and Mac. You can back up to 2 Gigabytes for free and you can backup unlimited data from your home computer for only .95 per month (even less with an annual subscription). They have a pro version as well for your office computer.

Many online backup companies offer a low cost data backup only to charge you on the back side to restore your backup data.  Not so with Mozy.  They have no hidden charges!  When I asked their tech support to confirm, they told me “We don’t hold your data for ransom.”

So, don’t be a loser. You’ve invested hours and dollars in your digital photo library.  It is literally priceless.  One day (maybe even tomorrow) you will be glad you did, or sorry you didn’t.  Save early and save often, and make data backup a critical part of your digital photography processes.

You might even encourage your friends to back up their data (send them a link to this article!)  You may become one of their biggest heroes the next time they experience a data loss event.

Today’s digital camera technology offers consumers an irresistible range of camera options coming from different top brands. From point and shoot compact digital cameras to large and bulky DSLRs and mid-sized cameras in between-the choices can be overwhelmingly endless. Shopping for a new camera can become overwhelming due to the number of models and specifications available today. So how can a consumer end up picking the cream of the crop?

While there is no single best digital camera (since choices vary according to each person’s unique needs and preferences), your best bet is of course to study the options available and rely on one of the top brands in the market today.

Canon Digital Cameras

What is the brand with the largest market share today? Canon! Canon is well known as a supplier of quality digital cameras. Its camera series lines, which include PowerShot (point and shoot) and EOS (DSLR), have consistently received numerous positive ratings from users and critiques.

Of course, not everything that Canon produces is flawless as there have been issues along the way; nevertheless this company enjoys a good reputation and an outstanding track record when it comes to high quality digital cameras.

Since cost is always a major concern, Canon has produced digital cameras that are within your means. The Canon Powershot A470 is a top-selling camera for good reason. This compact point and shoot camera comes with a 7.1 megapixel CCD, 3.4x optical zoom, and a 2.5″ LCD screen to frame your photos and review them easily. Quality and user-friendliness are combined in this piece of affordable camera.

Canon also recognizes the fact that digital cameras have also become a fashion accessory today and people are looking for beauty and style aside from excellent performance. The Canon A1000 IS was designed not only to look nice, but also to be easy to use as well. Even with its modern style, its features do not take a backseat. It has a whopping 10 megapixel CCD, a 4x zoom lens and Canon’s well-known image stabilization.

For adventure seekers, Canon created an action-packed camera called the Canon PowerShot D10, which is waterproof up to 10 meters, freezeproof from -10 degrees Celsius, and shockproof up to 1.22 meters. This superlative camera comes with a 12 megapixel sensor, 3x zoom lens, 2.5 inch LCD screen, and the ever-reliable image stabilization.

Proper Care and Maintenance

Just like with any other brand of digital camera, it is imperative that you take utmost care of your Canon camera repair. Even if Canon is known for its quality, it is still not invincible to wear and tear. As much as possible, protect your camera from dust and debris. Avoid dropping it or subjecting it to impact.

If you suspect any malfunction in your digicam, bring it immediately to a service center that has experience with Canon digital camera repair. If you prefer to do it yourself, look for a vendor selling genuine OEM Canon digital camera parts.

Producing high-quality photographs is not at all difficult with the excellent line of Canon PowerShot series. To ensure that you end up with the best choice that will meet your photography needs and requirements, review and compare different products before buying.

Preparation for Creative Photography

Preparation for Creative Photography

Many elements exist in taking great photographs and this article aims at helping you set up your camera and monitor to get the most out of the pictures you take.

More to it than Photoshop

Photoshop is a very powerful tool when it comes to photo editing and this program allows you to enhance and radically change just about any aspect of a photo. Although you can import an image into an application like Photoshop and edit it in many amazing ways to get the best results to suit your criterion, you start by taking a great picture.

Presetting your Digital Camera

Apart from a few exceptions you should always shoot in RAW format because you can always be assured there’s more creative leeway in a RAW file. JPEGs lack certain information in the data that makes up the file. If shooting in JPEG format make sure you shoot at the highest possible quality.

JPEGs have their role, for example, if you have little time to work on the photos after you shoot and just want to capture a snap, or you require fast sequence shooting then shooting in JPEG format is ideal.

Understanding your Cameras ISO

Every digital camera has a sensor to capture the image, similar to a computer chip. The camera ISO is related to the sensor and by adjusting the ISO you increase or decrease the sensitivity of the sensor to allow for taking images in awkward light situations. For example, a lower ISO setting reduces the light sensitivity and is used for overly bright scenes. A high ISO setting increases the light sensitivity and is suitable for taking pictures on a cloddy day.

Be Different, Be Creative

The great thing about digital photography is that you can create really impressive photos by simply playing around with your settings and experimenting. You will often find that a photo which is abstracted in some way will show more emotion, or reveal more about the subject in question.

On occasions you will go through phases where you can’t snap that great photo and everything always seems boring or lacking emotion and depth. If you hit a period like this then try one of the following:

Get High: Look around for something you can climb like a staircase, tree or step ladder.

Get Low: Look around and try taking pictures from a low angle i.e. down a flight of stairs, or an underground hatch.

Calibrate Your Monitor

The guidelines above will help you take wonderful high quality photos that are full of detail and impressive to look at. Next you will most likely want to edit these pictures using an image editor such as Adobe Photoshop to put the finishing touches to your creations but first you need to prepare your work station.

Online retailers often face issues with consumers who are using monitors that are not properly calibrated. Often what’s happening is the consumer is looking at a colour on a screen which is not true to life i.e. a red t-shirt which is really a burgundy t-shirt.

Adobe Gamma is a monitor calibration tool that comes packaged with Photoshop and it allows you to correctly calibrate the colours which your monitor displays. Alternatively, you can use QuickGama which is free software provided by Eberhard Werle.

How to Care For Your Digital Camera

The dawn of digital camera technology has undoubtedly offered limitless choices for professionals and amateurs alike to come about with the best possible photographic results. The variety of cameras available is huge, ranging from tiny compact point and shoot cameras to very large professional digital SLRs. Each type and class has its own strengths and limitations therefore making the task of shopping for cameras complicated. Camera preference will come down to the features and specifications that the individual desires, there is no one camera that will please everyone.

The best digital cameras will of course cost thousands of dollars due to advanced features and controls. The current top digital camera brands are Canon, Sony and Nikon.

The two most important and expensive parts of the camera are the lens and the LCD screen. These parts should be regularly cleaned and maintained. The fragile parts of the camera like the LCD screen should be well protected and not bumped or banged. Also don’t store a battery against the LCD inside your case; you might end up having to pay for a camera LCD screen repair It is also important to invest in good quality lens cleaning equipment such as a good lens brush, a lens blower and lens cloth. A lens blower can help remove dust and dirt, while a cleaning solution and cloth can remove debris that the blower cannot. One simple way to protect your camera lens is to always put the lens cover back on when you are done taking pictures.

Be sure to store your digital camera properly when not in use. It is recommended that the camera be stored in a cool and dry space. Always keep the camera out of the sun and from cold temperature. Digital camera batteries should also be taken out when the camera is not in use. And just as a precaution, magnets of any kind should be kept away from the camera body and definately the memory card.

Besides just the camera itself, you should also remember to take care of your accessories such as memory cards. These are small accessories, so you should take care to not lose or damage them. Never remove the memory card while transfering images to your computer. Memory cards should be stored in the camera or in a card case to avoid damage to them and avoid losing them.

Taking good care of your camera is important so that it will be with you for a long time. You should look for overall brand reliability before making your purchase, and Canon has a great rating; but this does not mean that the camera won’t suffer from normal wear and tear just from normal use. As much as possible, to avoid having to find a Canon digital camera repair shop you need to protect it from impact damage, water exposure, sand and dust and extreme tempertures.

If you notice any damage or malfunction to any part then it is important to find someone who can affordably provide you with reliable camera repair services. Remember that your camera cost a lot of money and it certainly pays to take good care of it.
